Mira Ball Productions is excited to announce it will be joining Noosa Arts Theatre as part of their Shorts on Stage competition, in May 2018. The event features 11 specially selected and highly entertaining plays from a range of groups and actors across Southeast Queensland.
Although new to the Sunshine Coast contest, Mira Ball Productions has a wealth of experience among theatre circuits and we are excited to be joining the line-up. At Shorts on Stage, we will showcase two productions among the smorgasbord of entertainment.
Returning to the spotlight, after its recent success at the 2017 Short+Sweet Festival, is fan-favourite ‘Update’ – a contemporary comedy that explores the perils of online dating in an unconventional way. Musical theatre guru and talented actress, Lauren Conway, has been cast as the infamous Becky (with the good hair!) and is excited to bring a fresh take to the much loved role.
“Becky is so spontaneous and silly – playing her has been really fun!” said Lauren.
“I have loved learning how to carry a show by myself and as a musical theatre girl it has been awesome working on a straight play. Audiences will have a good time with Update.”
Also premiering at Shorts on Stage is a new ten-minute production, by award-winning Elodie Boal, entitled ‘The Ascent’. The play concludes the notorious nursery rhyme and centres on what really happened when Jack and Jill went up the hill. Starring up-and-coming talents, Sophie Price as Jill and Cameron Egginton as Jack, this dark drama is bound to captivate audiences like never before.
“We’ve put a really unique twist on this much loved story and it pushes these familiar characters to an unseen level,” said author, Elodie.
“I’ve taken something really innocent and injected it with dark themes and modern undertones. The Ascent is definitely not for children anymore.”
North side musical theatre actress, Sophie Price, has starred in a number of local productions but has been amazed at how much The Ascent and her role as Jill has pushed her out of her comfort zone.
“The Ascent is raw and has encouraged me to find emotion. There isn’t anything to hide behind in this production and I’m excited for audiences to discover the authentic characters on stage,” said Sophie.
“In just 10 minutes, The Ascent traverses the extreme highs and lows of a relationship. There is honesty in the script, which allows the complexities and conflicts of the two characters shine through.”
Mira Ball Productions is among nine other theatre groups who will present at Noosa Arts Theatre on Saturday, 26 May and Sunday, 27 May. Both ‘Update’ and ‘The Ascent’ feature in both acts of the competition in a fast-moving selection of local theatre.
Audiences will an opportunity to determine their favourite within the competition – with ‘Best Play’ being awarded a cash prize of $500.00 for audience choice.
